Mealtime is an experience of great social and emotional importance. Our meal times offer a good opportunity for conversations and are a pleasurable time for your child. A hot vegetarian lunch and two snacks are provided each day; one mid-morning and one mid-afternoon. We offer a large variety of foods in order to give the children experiences with new and different tastes. Only nutritious snacks and balanced meals are served, so please do not send extra food, gum or candy to school. Special snacks, adequate for the entire class, may be shared for birthdays, etc. by making prior arrangements with the teacher.
If the child is allergic to any specific foods, please let the staff know so that proper menu arrangements can be made for him/her.Breakfast food is allowed for those children arriving prior to 7:30 a.m. When choosing what to bring please remember that what your child eats for breakfast affects his/her behavior for the day.
Birthdays are especially exciting to young children. Each child will have a special crown made to honor this happy occasion. Check with your child’s teacher to arrange snacks to share with his/her classmates.
Discipline at Discoveryland Preschool
The staff at Discoveryland Preschool use "time out" as the means of discipline. This procedure begins with 2 minutes. Additional increments of 1 minute may be applied, with the total time not exceeding 5 minutes, if the child's actions are not conducive to returning to the group. A child must have means to express feelings of aggression. We suggest clay to pound (manual motor dexterity), sand/water table activities (good hand/eye coordination), punching bag to hit (and vent anger), or a few minutes of quiet time to help ease these feelings within the child.
We do not administer corporal punishment.Show & Tell
Show & Tell will be on Monday and Thursday each week. Please place 1 item to share in a paper bag marked with the child’s name. This item will not be for play, but will be set aside until Show & Tell, and then put away for safekeeping.
Please do not allow your child to bring toys to preschool, except for toys that are needed in the very opening days of school to help ease your child's transition into our program. If toys are brought to school, we cannot be responsible for them. For Show & Tell, we highly recommend toys that go along with our monthly themes. Please DO NOT SEND GUNS OR WAR TOYS.
