State law requires each child, unless exempt for reasons prescribed, “shall have received a thorough physical examination which indicates that the child was found free of communicable disease.” Each child who attends our school must have a current immunization record. NO CHILD MAY BEGIN SCHOOL WITHOUT THIS IMMUNIZATION RECORD ON FILE AT THE SCHOOL. The physical examination form must be on-file two weeks after the child’s admission.

Discoveryland Health Policies

Preschoolers are very susceptible to infections and contagious diseases. For every child’s protection, our parents are asked to observe their children for symptoms of possible illness. The child’s temperature must be normal for 24 hours before the child may return to school. Members of the school staff are also required to make daily observations, and may not admit a child if symptoms of a severe cold or illness are present. In such cases, the child is isolated from the others and a parent is contacted. If a child arrives at school sick, he or she will be sent home. A child’s nose and eye drainage must be clear before he or she is re-admitted.

MEDICATION WILL ONLY BE ADMINISTERED WITH A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION AND ALL MEDICATION MUST HAVE THE CHILD'S NAME AND DIRECTIONS ATTACHED. MEDICATION MUST BE PROVIDED IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER.

If a child needs medical attention, but it is not an emergency, the school will make all attempts to contact the parent. If the parent cannot be reached, the school will call the emergency numbers on the emergency contact forms which were completed by the parent at the time of enrollment. Until the arrival of the parent, or an ambulance, the director or the assistant director will be in charge and make all decisions about the care of the child. The parent will be expected to assume responsibility for any resultant expense. The school will maintain a parent's signed consent form agreeing to this provision.

No child may stay indoors during outdoor play time. After a severe cold or illness it is sometimes advisable to keep children indoors for a few days, however, we do not maintain staff to take care of unwell children. Keep your child home a little longer if you do not wish him/her to be outdoors.
